Greetings in the name of the Lord!

The Kinders Department is an arm of the Children's Ministry (CM) at Wesley Methodist Church. The CM aims to teach and equip children from preschoolers to primary schoolers with an understanding and acceptance of what it means to have Christ as Lord and Savior and to help them initiate a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Kinders 9.30am caters to preschoolers from 18 months to 6 years. In the four and a half years that your child is with us, it is our wish and prayer that he or she will:

  • Hear the salvation message
  • Learn the disciplines of a Christian life:
    • Worship
    • Reading, Studying & Meditation of God's word
    • Prayer
    • Offering / Service
    • Evangelism

Kinders 9.30 am is subdivided into three sections, Little Lambs, Nursery and Kinders, where the teaching and learning of God's ways are pitched at age-appropriate learning abilities.

Little Lambs (18 months- 3 years)
Little Lambs is a one-hour programme aimed at toddlers from 18 months to 3 years old and is held in Basement Rooms 3 & 4. The programme begins at 9.30am and ends at 10.30am. Very young children thrive on repetition, so our programme begins with a session of simple praise and worship; where easy-to-follow and meaningful children's praise songs are sung and repeated. Bible story lessons are kept simple and highly sensorial and also, repeated often. Craft work is usually colouring, aimed primarily to help the young child strengthen his/her pincer grip. At Little Lambs, your child has to be accompanied by an adult. To prevent overcrowding, our teachers may have to deal out number cards to admit up to a maximum of 60 children. We seek your understanding for this unpopular but necessary measure as it is of utmost importance that we protect the well-being of the children and do not compromise on the air quality as well as maintain their safety should there be an emergency.

Little Lambs operate independently but will join Nursery and Kinders for combined programmes on special occasions.

Nursery (3 - 4 years)
When your child is three years-old, he or she will be promoted to the Nursery section. This promotion exercise is carried out twice a year, once in end January and the other in July.

In the Nursery section, we aim to help the children to be independent and separate from the caregiver. At this age, most children would have started attending some form of playschool and are generally quite ready to learn independence. Nevertheless, the readiness to separate from the caregiver will vary from child to child. To ease the separation anxiety, do assure your child that you will return to pick him/her up. Parents with newly promoted children should sit near the old Book Nook area during the church service, in case the teachers need to get in touch with you. Do get to know your child's teachers. We have good and experienced teachers to care for and teach the children. We seek your cooperation to work with the teachers to lessen the "pain" of separation.

The programme at Nursery continues to be simple but Bible verses are taught. We try to make it easier for the children by singing the verses to a familiar tune. The same verse will be sung over and over again for a few weeks. Craft work is more complicated; while the main focus is still on colouring, there will be more cut and paste activities.

Kinders (5 - 6 years)
The Kinders section receives the children in the year they turn five, concurrent with the K1 grade, and the children remain in this section for two years. By this time, they are able to read and write simple words, so the Bible story and craft work are pitched at a higher level. The children will hear the salvation message and be given the opportunity to invite the Lord Jesus into their lives. They will also learn how to pray. They will also continue to memorise scripture verses.

Programme Schedule and Content for Nursery and Kinders
Our programme begins at 9.30 am. Upon arrival, please retrieve your child's name tag (located outside the hall) and attach it onto him or her.

At the start of the programme, the two sections go for their respective worship, where the offering is also collected. Bible story and craft work follows after the worship.

Both the Nursery and Kinders sections have a similar lesson content. The children hear the same Bible story and learn the same memory verses but the teaching is age-specific.

Our programme ends at 10.40am. The Nursery section is dismissed from 10.40am while the Kinders section is dismissed from 10.50am. Please form a neat line outside the doors. For security reasons, we will not release your child to an older sibling (who is still a child) or to people we do not recognize. If someone else is picking your child instead of you, please inform your child's teachers beforehand.

Please be punctual. The next session starts at 11.30am and we will need to vacate the rooms by 11am for the next set of teachers to start their preparations.

Due to huge growth in children numbers currently, we are registering close to 200 children in the Plaza Hall every week.

Holy Communion

Taking effect in September 2009, a new system for Holy Communion will be in place. If you wish to take your child out for Holy Communion, you will need to register with the teacher in charge at the beginning of the session on the Holy Communion weeks. Each session will have a teacher in charge on the first and third weeks.

We support and understand the importance of desiring to take Holy Communion as a family. However, we are also concerned with the disruptions caused during class. The children are in the midst of a lesson, prayer or are doing their craftwork. Once you indicate your request to take your child out, we will make arrangements with the class teachers to have your child ready when you come at 10.25am.

We hope to minimise disruptions to lesson, prayer and class time. With the register, we would also be able to account for every child that is taken out. We seek your understanding and cooperation. Thank you.

Some Rules

  • Food is strictly not permitted in the Plaza Hall. Please refrain from feeding your child during class time. If there is a need to do so, please bring your child outside.
  • If you do want to buy gifts for the children, please do not buy food items. There are children with allergies or intolerances to certain foods and generally, high-sugar items are frowned upon by many parents.
  • Please do not allow your child to bring toys to CM. It is distracting, not only to your child, but to the other kids as well.
  • We apply a hand sanitizer on your child's hands before he/she enters the room. This is a preventive measure against the Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD). It also serves to inculcate a sense of responsibility in the child. If there are any sores or bubbles on their hands, they will not be allowed to enter and join in the program.
  • We clean and "dettolised" our mats regularly and we conduct random checks on their mouths and hands. If your child is unwell, even for slight coughs and colds, please do not bring him/ her to class. Young childrens' immunity is low so we want to minimize risks.
  • For those mums who are still nursing their young ones, there is a Breastfeeding Room which is next to the Cry Room in the Main Sanctuary where there is complete privacy and comfort.
  • We seek your understanding and co-operation to observe the above rules.

Fire & Building Evacuation:
In case of building evacuation or fire, all children will be ushered out through the appropriate exits. A plan has been established to ensure this process runs smoothly and safely.

Our Teachers
The Kinders 9.30am CM is manned by a team of more than 100 teachers, all volunteers. Quite a few are parent converts. They brought their kids and decided to sign up as teachers / helpers. Many have continued their service for a good many years.

Our teachers are committed to pray for your child, so if there are any prayer needs, please let the teachers know. Be assured that the prayer items will be kept private and confidential within the teachers of our department.

God bless,
Liana Seah
